Overview

Northern Peru has some of South America's best surfing conditions, and so PeruNorth has created an itinerary to reflect this, based in Chicama which boasts the longest left-handed wave in the world, 4 km (2.5 miles) long.

This wave attracts top-class surfers, but conditions are also ideal for beginners ... and every category in between.

The famous Chicama wave.

The waves at Chicama are most consistent between April and October, but can certainly be surfed all year, with water temperatures fluctuating from 15 to 20Β°C (60 - 68Β°F).

Chicama is most easily accessed from Trujillo, but can also be reached from Chiclayo, so could make a wonderful book-end to an overland northern Peru trip.

4D Itinerary

Chicama Surfing 4-day itinerary:

Sunset over Chicama Beach.

NB. Shorter & longer itineraries can be arranged, to suit your timeframe.

Day 1: Arrival in Trujillo (or Chiclayo); transfer to Chicama (Dinner)

On arrival at Trujillo Airport or bus station, you will be met by a driver holding a sign with your name (which may be slightly misspelled!). Pick-up can also be arranged from a hotel.

You will then be driven the 70 km (43 miles) to Chicama, in a comfortable private van - a journey that takes roughly an hour, along the PanAmerican Highway.
NB. For those arriving in Chiclayo, the transfer is longer and has an additional cost.

On arrival at your Chicama accommodation, you will be checked into your room and - depending on your arrival time - may have time to make your first foray into the Pacific waters, right in front of the hotel.

Tonight, you can enjoy your first delicious meal at the hotel restaurant (included), which offers a range of local and international dishes, making use of the abundant, fresh, local ingredients.

Day 2: Chicama: Full Day's Surfing (Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner)

Chicama surfers using the tow-back service.

The day is dedicated to surfing. We provide a tow-back service, using Zodiac speedboats, so as to maximise your time in the water. In the morning, this service runs from 8.30am to 12 midday; and in the afternoon, from 3pm to 6pm.

All this exertion will no doubt make you hungry, so a full lunch and dinner is also included.

Please note that surf board rental and lessons can be arranged, but these incur an additional cost.

Apres-surf options include use of an outdoor pool, with Jacuzzi; a sauna; a fully-equipped gym; and a spa, with massage services (at additional cost). And of course, there is the tried-and-tested relaxation technique of a couple of drinks in the lounge-bar, reliving the day's action with your fellow surfers.

Day 3: Chicama: Full Day's Surfing (Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner)

Consistent waves breaking on Chicama Beach.

Another day to indulge your surfing passion.

For those that don't surf, or want a break, there are plenty of alternatives.

There are trails in the hills above the hotel that are good for jogging and hiking, or visits to one or all of the many archaeological attractions in and around Trujillo, including the world-famous citadel of Chan Chan, can be arranged through the hotel.

Many people, though, opt to enjoy the hotel's convivial atmosphere and varied facilities, when not in the water.

Day 4: Transfer to Trujillo (or Chiclayo) (Breakfast)

At the appropriate time, our private van will transfer you to Trujillo or Chiclayo for your onward travel. Hopefully, you will have time in the morning for one last surf.

Please note that extra days can easily be arranged. There are a number of well-known surf spots in the region that can be accessed, such as PacasmayoPoemape and Huanchaco, to provide a variety of surfing experiences and make the most of the conditions.

Chicama isn’t a great place to visit, unless you are into surfing!

The hotel was excellent, however, so I enjoyed relaxing on site!
