Overview

Tingana is a unique, community-run, nature reserve located on the upper Mayo river, covering 1,737 hectares (4,292 acres) of rainforest, in the San Martin Region at approximately 800 m (2,600 ft) above sea level.

It is located in the watersheds of the Avisado and Romero rivers and is therefore an amphibious reserve, where one must take a canoe in order to explore.

Capuchin and Tufted Capuchin monkeys, marmosets, river otters, coati, and sloths are just some of the mammals one can find inside of the reserve, along with a wide variety of birds, frogs, reptiles and butterflies.

A visit to the Palestine Caves is included in the three-day itinerary. These are part of a karst system, with impressive stalactites and stalagmites, as well as species of insects, bats, arachnids and oilbirds (Steatornis caripencis) that have adapted to life underground.
