Belen Market

Belen Market (Mercado de Belén) is a famous and bustling market located in the Peruvian Amazon city of Iquitos.

It is predominantly located along the banks of the Itaya River, a tributary of the mighty Amazon River, and incorporates various sections.

The changing levels of the river over the course of the year have necessitated that much of the market is built on wooden stilts, to keep it above the high water mark.

Another coping mechanism for when water levels rise is that parts of the market become accessible only by boat … and vendors sell their products from boats or floating platforms. Hence it has acquired the name ‘the floating market’, giving it a unique flavour.

Adding to its unique, vibrant atmosphere is the diverse array of products that reflect the flora, fauna and culture of Amazonia. There is a dizzying range of goods, including fresh fruits and vegetables, local delicacies, freshwater fish, bush meat, handicrafts, clothing, medicinal plants, and traditional Amazonian products.

It should be noted that the market is not for the weak-of-stomach as there are sights and smells that are quite visceral, such as butchered turtles and the reproductive organs of a caiman … and the sanitation practices would probably not meet Western standards, despite recent municipal efforts to improve them.

Nonetheless, if you can overcome this, Belen Market provides visitors with a rich cultural experience, allowing them to witness local daily life and commerce. It is an opportunity to explore the uniqueness of the Amazon region, interact with the friendly vendors … and perhaps buy a one-off souvenir.
