And being located inside their private reserve, it is the ideal place to discover the ancient indigenous heritage of the Amazonian Ese Eja Tribe. In fact, the management guides & staff of Posada Amazonas are almost entirely from the local Esa Eja community.

And after a day of jungle discovery, there are a number of relaxing services to be enjoyed, aside from the delicious cuisine:

  • Lounge in an inviting hammock

  • Have a massage with Amazon plant-based lotions in the Spa

  • Enjoy a rainforest-inspired cocktail at the bar

Finally, nights are spent in comfortable, eco-friendly rooms, with private bathrooms, to prepare you for the next day’s discoveries.

Activities

When staying at Posada Amazonas, visitors can choose from a wide range of stand-out Amazon excursions, to create a personalised, custom experience. Here are some of the choices:

ADVENTURE Activities at POSADA Amazonas

Jungle Mountain Biking: A great way to explore the rainforest is by bike, along 7 km (4.5 miles) of trails. It takes about an hour to complete. GT mountain bike, helmet & cycling gear, water bottle, and mountain bike guide provided.

Build Your Own Jungle Raft: Hand-made wooden rafts - balsas - have been the traditional mode of transport of Amazon dwellers for millennia.

We build our own balsa, using the materials and guidance provided.

We then test if it is river-worthy, in the safe environment of Posada Amazonas’ landing area.

NATURE Activities at POSADA Amazonas

Sunset Safari: A boat on the Tambopata River is a great place to enjoy the spectacular Amazon sunset.

So, in the late afternoon, we go for an easy-going, two-hour boat ride in the company of our guide, to recognise any species seen and explain the dynamics of Amazonia.

Tres Chimbadas Lake Visit: A 15-minute boat trip, followed by 30-minute hike brings us to Tres Chimbadas Lake. This is an ox-bow lake, which we explore using a traditional canoe or catamaran.

Of the many species that inhabit Tres Chimbadas, perhaps the most iconic is the Giant Amazon Otter, but there are also Black Caiman, Squirrel Monkey and abundant birdlife. Early morning is the best time to spot these.

Piranha Fishing: Whilst at Tres Chimbadas Lake, we also have the chance to try our hand at fishing. Using simple, home-made equipment, we should be able to catch (and release) piranhas, and perhaps some smaller catfish.

Canopy Tower: A 20-minute hike from Posada Amazonas, through pristine rainforest, is a 42 m (138 ft) scaffolding canopy tower.

Having climbed the stairs to the top, we have a comprehensive view of the vast jungle, and can spot some of the multiple species that spend their lives in or above the tree tops.

Parrot & Macaw Clay Lick: A 15-minute walk from Posada Amazonas takes us to a clay lick frequented by parrots, parakeets and macaws. We observe them from a blind, as first they gather in nearby trees, before plucking up the courage to land at the clay lick.

For reasons that are not fully understood, parrots and parakeets arrive early in the day, while Red & Green Macaws - and other macaw species - tend to arrive mid-morning.

Ceiba Trail: This 2-hour walk takes us through terra firme and flood-plain rainforest to a huge ceiba (or kapok) tree. There should be numerous wildlife-spotting opportunities on the way there and back.

Night Walk: The Amazon rainforest is as alive at night, as during the day. After dark is the time to witness a bizarre and beautiful world of nocturnal amphibians, reptiles insects and birds. Often we can hear them, rather than see them.

On clear evenings, we can also enjoy the star-filled views of the Southern Hemisphere night sky.

The standard trail takes about an hour, with our guide pointing out the fauna. For the energetic, there is a Master Night Walk, which goes further and takes over 2 hours.

LOCAL CULTURE at Posada Amazonas

We will be able to try some, as we learn about their growth, harvest and uses.

Ethnobotanical Centre Ñape: We travel 15 minutes downriver to the Indigenous Community of Infierno. Here the Ese’Eja run a Medical Centre using traditional, local medicines and knowledge passed down by their ancestors, in combination with Western medicine.

While on the river, we can look for more wildlife, such as Capybara, the largest rodent in the planet.

Brazil Nut Trail & Camp: This hike takes us through a forest of Brazil nut trees that have been harvested for decades (if not centuries). There are the remains of a camp used by Brazil nut harvesters for two months of the year.

Brazil nuts are the only sustainably harvested product in the rainforest and we learn about the whole process: harvest, transportation, drying, preparation for consumption.

CHILDREN’s ACTIVITIES AT POSADA AMAZONAS

Circle of Fire: Our guide narrates traditional Esa Eja stories that have been handed down from generation to generation. They describe the mysteries of the forest and its inhabitants, and the founding myth of the Ese Ejas.

Children’s Rainforest Trail: This is a scavenger hunt in search of specially-hidden seeds and nuts, ending at the great Ceiba tree where the treasure is hidden.

Rainforest T-Shirt Design: Using natural dyes, we design and paint our own t-shirt.

Jungle Play-Doh: Using clay from the macaw clay-lick, we learn how to create our own sculpture.

Once it has dried in the sun, we can paint it, and keep as a unique memento of our stay at Posada Amazonas.

Building Amazon Toys: We learn how to make a ball, in the traditional Esa Eja way, using banana leaves.
